A Maggie Valley, North Carolina Treasure!

By Glenn Arnette, lll

Discovery!  Located in the hills of Maggie Valley is one of the most professional “authentic” historical museums in the Country.  It is the WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM and it is the home of the collection of rare American motorcycles and significant automobiles.

Why did I not hear of this before arriving in the Maggie Valley area?  Why are the State of North Carolina, the local Tourism Board and the Chamber of Commerce not rallying around this opportunity?  Do they not realize that this attraction, outside of the “mountains,” is the biggest marketing opportunity for attracting multitudes of visitors to the area?  It’s called fill the hotels, restaurants and other attractions in the area.

The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of transportation for future generations to enjoy with emphasis on American motorcycles.  I stress American as this is a USA collection and not some foreign import!

While there I spoke to a number of visitors and found their reaction to the museum unbelievable, as they were extremely impressed with it history and hands on operation of the business.  The motorcycles and automobiles are all in excellent working operation and can be started immediately without hesitation.

Another major factor of this museum is the fact that it is “hands own.”  You can touch and actually feel the vibrations of the motors when revved up for a customer.

Listen, I am talking about a museum packed into 33,000 square feet featuring Harley Davidson, Indian, Excelsior, Crocker, Henderson Motorcycles and so much more.  The exhibits range from board track racers, hill climbers, and original paint machines to American Dirt Track racing, choppers, bobbers and one-of-a-kind motorcycles.

Now I am no authority of motorcycles and collectable cars, but when I am impressed with a first class operation like Wheels Through Time, I am going to tell you about it.  You don’t even have to understand the world of anything to appreciate this collection of America Treasures.  A must for your vacation!

The man behind the Wheels Through Time collection is the brilliance of Dale Walkster.  This television star and creative mind has truly collected the world’s best.  Even Jay Leno and Dale have frequent conversations about cars and motorcycles.  This is one major operation!

Nothing can be done without the help from Matt Walkster, Dale’s son who knows all the “ins and outs” of the operation.  It is obvious this is a family adventure and it will be around for years to come.  Wait until you meet Hailey, Mimi and Melody.  Great people to have on your staff! (I can’t forget Betty upstairs!)

From International fame (Worldwide interest), Wheels Through Time is a major player and should be the prime feature of the area.  It should be at the top of the list for things to do.  While I was there, people were from all around the Country and many were from other parts of the world.  Not only was it a great experience, everyone rallied and the camaraderie among the guests and owners makes each guest a special visitor.

I still can’t believe that the Wheels Through Time is not the featured attraction for the Maggie Valley area.  Strange!
